Can the Google's driver-less cars co-exist with the manually operated cars?

Machines as we all know, are things that never fail to do the work for which it is made for. But it's we human beings who make mistakes while creating the limitations for a machine.

Google Company has started working on a project named "Google Car" which is fully automated.

This project is being led by Sebastian Thrun, former director of the Stanford Artificial intelligence Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View. This particular car that is being developed by Google does not contain steering wheel and pedals. You guys might think this cannot be done practically, but believe me guys its driving is much better than ours.

Google car, consists of a LIDAR system and range finder that is mounted on the roof of the car. Although the prototype that is worked on looks like a toy car, is assembled by Roush Enterprises and uses equipment from Bouch,ZF Lenksysteme, LG and Continental, runs at a maximum speed of about 40 km/h and has a screen that displays the route map. The range finder helps in calculating the absolute range that is being maintained between two cars which helps in predicting and preventing accidents. This technology is also equipped and tested on different types of cars with the self -driving equipment, including the Toyota Prius, Audi TT and Lexus RX405h.

But until June 2015, 23 Google cars have been involved in 12 minor road accidents in public roads. After keen enquiry and investigation about the incidents, Google reported that the cause is either due to manually driven or due to fault of the driver of another vehicle. And the limitations of this type of cars is it has not been tested in heavy rain and snow conditions due to safety concerns. As this car priorly depends on pre-programmed route data, it doesn’t obey temporary traffic lights and the vehicle has difficulty in identifying the signals given by police officer signalling to stop. Google analysed these issues and will have them solved by 2020.
